Accident Advisory Against Working with Lift Car

14 January 2019, a worker was declared dead at the scene when the lift he was using to move demolition debris down from the 8th floor started going down at a very high speed and landed in the lift pit.

With this unfortunate accident, we urge employers and workers to be very careful while working with lift cars. Do read thru our recommendation as to what should be done when working with Lift Cars.

Testing and examination

Do ensure that the lift cars that are in use have been checked by an approved and authorised examiner. Only when the authorised examiner has declared the lift car to be “fit-for-use” for material transport, should you use it.

Authorised Examiner should also be caution to exercise due diligence in testing, examining and certifying any lifts that are “fit-for-use” for its supposed purpose. They must also ensure that any safety devices are in place and the safety devices are in proper and good working order.

Safety Devices

Ensure that all lift car safety devices like the brake system, safety gear, overload detector and buffer are all in proper and good working order. They also have to properly maintained to make sure that they are able to continue their operability, effectiveness and usability.

Lift owners are recommended to try and upgrade the lift braking system with built-in redundancy and self-monitoring features like a rope gripper to prevent unintended car movements and to ensure the safety of s passengers. A rope gripper can be set to automatically stop any lift once they detect any unintended lift car movement. This is a very good feature to have to prevent accidents from happening.

Workers who are interacting or using the lift car should be reminded that they should not by-pass or remove any safety devices installed or fitted to the car. This point should be reinforced to everybody interacting with the lift cars.

Material Transport

If the lift cars are to be used to transport any form of building material or debris, ensure that the materials being transported are within the safe working load of the lift car.

Ensure that materials being transported are also properly stacked or fastened securely to prevent it from moving around while in transport or from falling over accidentally.

Safe work procedure and emergency response

Ensure that a safe work procedure has been created and is being used in the workplace constantly. Ensure that the safe workplace procedure is being followed by every employee or worker that is in contact with the lift car.

Workers must also hold responsibility for their actions and be properly brief on what they should do when an emergency arises. Examples of emergencies are Lift malfunction or unintended movement of the lift car. Workers and employees can be properly brief on what to do during these form of emergencies at toolbox meeting before work officially start.
